Site managers on construction projects are masters of many tasks. They need to be able to do everything from making sure those new tiles are on track for delivery to keeping track of the daily working conditions, all while staying in close communication with their team on site. Canadian construction software company CMIC reached out for help redesigning their desktop based software to be accessible on a mobile tablet device.
I led the design of the project, working closely with CMIC's mobile development team during execution. We conducted user research to understand the current needs and pain point's of the software's main users: site managers. Additionally, we built a hand held application for construction workers on site to log their time and track their expenses while on the job site.
I produced a styleguide to reinforce the brand and create visual & consistency across the app.
One of the pain points of site managers was manually tracking the time of each employee who worked on their job site. This was previously done by the manager at the end of the day, on paper. To address this, we built a mobile feature that allows the construction site workers to check-in/check-out to the job site from the convenience of their phone.
The dashboard for site managers highlighted their most commonly used tasks, as well as outstanding action items.
Multi-level navigation allows the site manager to quickly jump into a specific task.
The RFI (Request for Information) log is the Site Manager's main point of communication. Here, they can send/retrieve messages related to ongoing construction projects. We used familiar patterns from commonly used email applications to make the information easy to digest.
Timesheets allowed site managers to submit timesheets for their employees. Duplicating previous timesheets allowed managers to save time for ongoing projects.
